한국 근현대미술을 대표하는 네 작가의 작품을 소개하는 < Korean Modern Masters >가 8월 24일부터 9월 23일까지 아트웍스파리서울 갤러리에서 개최된다. 이번 전시는 김환기, 백남준, 이성자, 이배의 회화와 판화를 중심으로, 1957년 김환기의 유화부터 2018년 이배의 판화에 이르기까지, 한국 현대미술의 흐름을 형성해 온 네 작가의 주요 작품들을 한자리에서 선보인다. 

특히 김환기의 1957년작 < 한국의 풍경 >은 프랑스 개인 컬렉터가 오랜 기간 소장해 온 작품으로 이번 전시를 통해 국내에 처음 공개된다. 이 작품은 김환기가 파리에 체류하던 시기에 제작되었으며, 맑은 청색, 한국의 자연과 정서를 환기하는 모티프, 기하학적으로 배치된 화면 구성 등 그의 파리 시기 작품에서 나타나는 주요 조형적 특징이 집약되어 있다. 또한 김환기가 1956년 파리 베네지트 갤러리 전시 포스터에도 활용했던 < 산 >의 판화 작품도 함께 선보인다.

텔레비전과 전자 기술, 로봇 등을 통해 인간과 예술 그리고 기술의 관계를 탐구해온 백남준의 작품 세계가 캔버스와 판화라는 평면 작업으로 확장된 1980년대 작품들도 소개한다. 특히 1989년 프랑스 혁명 200주년을 기념으로 제작된 판화 연작  에서 백남준은 프랑스 혁명과 관련된 여덟 인물을 로봇 형상으로 그려냈다. 이번 전시에서는 그중 프랑스 신고전주의 화가 자크 루이 다비드의 이름을 차용한 를 만나볼 수있다.

이성자는 1950년대 초 파리로 건너가 활동한 1세대 재불 한국 작가이다. 대지와 나무의 질감을 연상시키는 이미지, 기하학적 조형요소, 부드러운 파스텔 색채가 결합된 그의 작품들은 시적인 분위기를 자아낸다. 이번 전시에서는 그의 초기 회화 작품과 그의 작품 세계를 대표하는 매체 중 하나인 목판화도 살펴볼 수 있다. 

네 작가 가운데 가장 젊은 세대에 속하는 이배는 1990년 무렵 파리에 정착하면서 숯을 작업에 적극적으로 사용하기 시작했다. 그에게 숯이라는 재료는 한국 작가로서의 뿌리를 재인식하게 한 중요한 매개였다. 숯을 활용하여 강렬한 흑과 백의 대비와 먹이 움직이는 듯한 화면을 구현한 이배 특유의 작품들도 이번 전시에서 함께 감상할 수 있다.

아트웍스파리서울 갤러리는 2014년 서울에 설립된 이래, 한국과 프랑스를 중심으로 현대 미술의 교류를 이어오고 있다. < Korean Modern Masters >는 서로 다른 세대에 걸쳐 프랑스와 각기 다른 방식으로 접점을 맺어온 네 작가가 국제 미술의 흐름 속에서 구축해 온 독자적인 작품 세계를 한자리에서 조망하는 전시가 될 것이다. 

< Korean Modern Masters >, an exhibition presenting works by four leading figures of Korean modern and contemporary art, will be held at Art Works Paris Seoul Gallery from August 24 to September 23. Centered on paintings and prints by Kim Whanki, Paik Nam June, Rhee Seund Ja, and Lee Bae, the exhibition brings together major works by four artists who have shaped the trajectory of Korean contemporary art, ranging from Kim Whanki’s 1957 oil painting to Lee Bae’s 2018 print.

In particular, Kim Whanki’s 1957 work Landscape of Korea, which had been held for many years in a private French collection, will be presented in Korea for the first time through this exhibition. Created during Kim Whanki’s stay in Paris, the work brings together key formal characteristics of his Paris period, including clear blue tones, motifs that evoke Korean nature and sentiment, and a geometrically arranged composition. Also on view is a print of Mountain, an image Kim Whanki also used for the poster of his 1956 exhibition at Galerie M. Benezit in Paris.

The exhibition also presents works by Paik Nam June from the 1980s. His artistic practice, which had explored the relationship between humanity, art, and technology through television, electronic technologies, and robots, also extended into two-dimensional works on canvas and in print. In particular, in the print series Evolution, Revolution, Resolution, produced in 1989 to commemorate the bicentenary of the French Revolution, Paik depicted eight figures associated with the French Revolution in the form of robots. This exhibition presents David, named after the French Neoclassical painter Jacques-Louis David.

Rhee Seund Ja was a first-generation Korean artist based in France who moved to Paris in the early 1950s. Her works combine imagery reminiscent of the textures of earth and wood, geometric formal elements, and soft pastel colors, creating a poetic atmosphere. The exhibition presents both an early painting and woodcut prints, one of the representative media of her artistic practice.

Lee Bae, the youngest of the four artists, began actively using charcoal in his work after settling in Paris around 1990. For him, charcoal became an important medium through which he rediscovered his roots as a Korean artist. The exhibition also presents works that are characteristic of Lee Bae’s practice, in which charcoal creates a strong contrast between black and white and surfaces that evoke the movement of ink.

Since its establishment in Seoul in 2014, Art Works Paris Seoul Gallery has continued to foster exchanges in contemporary art, primarily between Korea and France.  brings together four artists from different generations, each of whom established a connection with France in a different way and developed a distinctive artistic practice within the international art world.
