Frédéric Léglise belongs to the new generation of artists focusing on a return to painting. He starts by pho- tographing his female models, captured in the intimacy of a sometimes barely-suggested nudity. The women emerge from a plain white background in a palette of acid colours and pastels that have come to characterise the artist’s work. Recently he developed a series called Close-up, which revisits and quotes his own works, cropping certain details from his past paintings and repainting them larger. For the painter, it is a question of re-examining the classic conception of the portrait, of also dialoguing with abstraction, of playing with the notion of scale; in the same way as in the cinema we can go from a wide shot to a close-up on the same face. In line with the quote from MauriceDenis; “Remember that a painting, before being a war horse, a naked woman or any anecdote, is essentially a flat surface covered with colors in a certain order assembled”, the artist through this series puts at a distance the subject by painting from cropping of his own paintings. This time his paintings have been shown in particular at the Belevedere Museum in Vienna, the Frissiras Muse- um in Athens, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, the Museum of Fine Arts in Timisoara , also in FRAC Haute-Normandie, at La Maison Rouge and at Le Passage from Retz in Paris. He works are in many important collectinos including Collection Danute et Alain MallartBruxelles and redbull hangard.
